SOUNDBITES: FORD'S NEW "ACTIVE" SAFETY RADAR WARNING SYSTEM

In 2009 Ford Motor Company will introduce a new "active" safety radar warning system to help driviers avoid rear-end accidents. Ford Supervisor and Safety Engineer, Jerry Engelman says the Collision Warning with Brake Support detects moving vehicles ahead and warns the driver of danger with an alarm and warning light.

"We use a radar system wherever the radar is always vigalent watching the traffic, looking out for trouble if it sees a potential of a collision it's going to alert the driver to take evasive action, hopefully to avoid the accident, all together." 12 sec.

Collision Warning with Brake Support is one of three new radar-based active safety technologies Ford is launching in 2008 and 2009. Engelman said the radar equipment is attached to the front of the car.

Cut# 2: "The radar is packaged up in the front bumper, things that are reflective bounce back off, it works very much the same way as light does with the human eye it's just that it can shine through the bumper so we can hide and make the car look nice but still have the safety." :13sec.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety administration (NHTSA), the majority of accidents involve driver inattention .

Engelman says research indicates that Collision Warning with Brake Support could be particularly helpful in warning a driver who is distracted or drowsy.
