About the Sustainability Report
The report adheres to guidelines set by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), a nonprofit organization working to make sustainability reports a routine part of business. More than 3,000 companies from 60 countries issue sustainability reports using GRI guidelines.
Similar to financial reports issued by many companies quarterly, Ford’s Sustainability Report is a compilation of information gathered from various stakeholders. The Ford Environmental Quality Office, for example, reports on progress made in areas such as water usage and waste reduction.
Unlike financial reports, however, the sustainability report is issued just once a year and is completely voluntary.
Thomas Niemann, reporting manager for Ford Sustainability and Vehicle Environmental Matters, said the report is so comprehensive it requires its own website and the information included in it takes about 10 months to compile.
Ford drafted the report with help from
Ceres, a coalition of investors, environmental groups and other public interest organizations working with companies on sustainable business practices. The Ceres stakeholder team is an independent group of individuals drawn primarily from the Ceres coalition and represents a range of constituencies that have expertise in environmental, social and governance issues.
