Ford and Condé Nast to Display Thunderbird-Inspired Fashion Designs

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 22, 2001 – Some of America’s greatest fashion designers are dressing up in the new 2002 Ford Thunderbird and have a place to go.

To celebrate the rebirth of an American motoring icon, Thunderbird, Ford and Condé Nast Publications will host a fashion extravaganza benefiting NY Fashion Cares at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City during Fashion Week on Thursday, Sept. 13, from 6-9 p.m.

Top American fashion designers, including John Bartlett, Carolina Herrera, Marc Jacobs, Gene Meyer, William Reid and Diane von Furstenberg, along with accessory designers Lambertson-Truex, Jack Spade and eyewear designer Oliver Peoples have created one-of-a-kind “Thunderbird-inspired” designs to be showcased at the event.

All proceeds will benefit NY Fashion Cares, a community coalition charity that offers funds to local organizations assisting under-served communities in New York City.

"In so many respects, the automobile is a medium of self-expression and a fashion statement," said Doug Gaffka – Ford’s Living Legends design director. "This event blends the themes – all to benefit a very worthy cause." The all-new 2000 Ford Thunderbird expresses a bold, confident and free feeling delivered in the form of a dramatically designed, two-seat, rear-wheel-drive, V-8-powered, convertible roadster—a modern throwback to another optimistic American era.

As part of the campaign, Condé Nast Publications will feature the Thunderbird inspired fashions in the February issues of Vogue, Architectural Digest, Gentlemen’s Quarterly, Vanity Fair, Gourmet, Condé Nast Traveler, Bon Apetit, House and Garden and The New Yorker, as well as Fairchild’s publication W.

NY Fashion Cares offers direct assistance to community organizations in New York City. This year’s beneficiaries were organizations sponsoring breast cancer screening and treatment programs in low-income areas. For more information, contact fashioncares@att.net or http://www.newyorkfashioncares.org.
