SPORT TRAC CONCEPT FEATURES FORD'S UNIQUE ROLL STABILITY CONTROL™ SAFETY TECHNOLOGY
Roll Stability Control (RSC™), Ford's groundbreaking technology to address the risk of rollover, is included in the Sport Trac concept.
Vehicle sensors and advanced onboard technologies work together to monitor the vehicle's roll stability condition approximately 150 times per second and if a potential rollover or loss of control is sensed, the system intervenes. Using the anti-lock brake system to briefly pinch the brakes on one wheel at a time – something no driver can do – the Roll Stability Control™ system calms the motion and helps restore safe maneuvering.
Other automakers' electronic stability systems measure yaw (side-to-side turning) and in some instances lateral acceleration or deceleration. Only Ford's Roll Stability Control™ can directly measure body roll. Ford is the only auto manufacturer with a system featuring an additional gyroscopic silicon sensor to measure the actual roll rate and roll motion of the vehicle. Ford's patented RSC system measures movement in three directions: yaw, or side-to-side turning, lateral acceleration or deceleration and body roll. The system uses a steering angle sensor to compare how the driver is positioning the steering wheel to feedback from the anti-lock brake and traction control system wheel sensors about road contact and tire traction.
Ford has 80 patents or patents pending and is making the technology available for license by other automakers.
