2005 Shelby GR-1 CONCEPT Environment

  • 94.5 horsepower per liter
  • 6.4-liter, all-aluminum V-10 engine
  • 605 hp @ 6,750 rpm; 501 foot-pounds of torque @ 5,550 rpm
"Right out of the box, we developed and demonstrated a drivable car that has the character of a great touring car – not a race-car derived character."
– Manfred Rumpel, Manager, Advanced Product Creation

The 300-horsepower 4.6-liter V-8 found in the 2005 Mustang GT boasts a very healthy 65.2 horsepower per liter of displacement. The V-10 engine at the heart of the GR-1 concept is even more adept at unlocking the energy in a gallon of gasoline. This amazingly efficient powerplant is able to generate 94.5 horsepower per liter of displacement without the benefit of turbocharging or supercharging.

This is definitely race-car territory. Race cars, however, do not have to operate to the refined level expected of – and demonstrated – by the GR-1. Nor do race engines have to labor under the constraints of mufflers, restrictive exhaust systems and emission controls.
