Ford’s award-winning EcoBoost technology has reached a major milestone with sales of vehicles equipped with the engine surpassing one million in China. This achievement comes approximately five years after the technology first arrived in the market.
Originally introduced to China in 2011, EcoBoost technology was created to meet the automotive challenge of combining performance and the capability of better fuel economy and lower carbon dioxide emissions. The secret to EcoBoost is a range of innovative technologies that give drivers mileage when they need it and power when they want it.
“Ford’s EcoBoost technology offers our customers the capability of performance and fuel efficiency,” said Pete Hardigan, Ford’s director of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering in Asia Pacific. “It exemplifies the promise of ‘Mileage You Need, Power You Want’, which allows our customers to experience great fuel economy when they drive in an ecofriendly manner and outstanding performance when they need it.”
By reaching this milestone, the one million vehicles have saved more than 450 million liters of fuel, enough for a Ford Kuga to travel around the equator 146,000 times. Additionally, these one million vehicles have reduced CO2 emissions by more than one million metric tons.
As one of Ford’s most advanced engines, the EcoBoost lineup offers the capability of fuel efficiency and power to meet a wide range of driver needs. Ford has 275 U.S. patents on EcoBoost, with another 200 pending. Ford has more U.S. patents on gasoline turbocharged direct-injection – EcoBoost – technology than any other automaker today.
The most popular EcoBoost-equipped vehicle in China over the last five years has been the Ford Kuga, with approximately 400,000 vehicles sold, while the new Ford Mondeo has been the most popular sedan, with approximately 300,000 vehicles sold. These two nameplates combined account for 70 percent of all EcoBoost sales.
EcoBoost-equipped vehicle sales exceeded 100,000 in the first quarter, with one in three Ford customers choosing a vehicle equipped with the award-winning technology. Last year, Ford sold 344,904 vehicles equipped with EcoBoost technology, accounting for one fourth of the total sales for the year.
Ford’s global EcoBoost engine family includes the 1.0-liter three-cylinder; 1.5-liter, 1.6-liter, 2.0‑liter and 2.3-liter four-cylinder engines; and the powerful 2.7-liter and 3.5-liter V6 engines. In China, EcoBoost technology is available on 90 percent of Ford passenger vehicles, including the Ford Focus, Mondeo, Taurus, Ecosport, Kuga, Edge, Explorer, Everest, Fiesta ST, Focus ST, Focus RS and Mustang.
