Doug Field

Doug Field is chief advanced technology and embedded systems officer, Ford Motor Company, effective Sept. 7, 2021. He reports to Jim Farley, Ford CEO.

Doug leads Ford’s Embedded Software and Hardware organization, driving the design, development and implementation of the Blue Oval Intelligence tech stack for Ford, Lincoln and Ford Pro products. Doug and his team are responsible for delivering seamless, delightful and always-on experiences, carrying responsibility for infotainment, navigation, driver-assist technology, connected services and vehicle cybersecurity. His team develops and delivers scalable technology platforms to be deployed across Ford global products, leads the relationships with key technology partners and Ford’s digital developer ecosystem, and is responsible for Ford Power-Up over-the-air updates which deliver new experiences, improve quality and reduce costs.

Doug joined Ford from Apple, where he served as VP, Special Projects. Before that, he was Senior VP of Engineering at Tesla, where he led the development of the Model 3. Doug also held overall responsibility for the development of Apple’s Mac hardware, and was the first employee and VP, Design and Engineering, at Segway. His role at Ford marks a return to where he began his career as a development engineer from 1987 to 1993.

Doug attended Purdue University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and met his wife, Cathy. He also studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating with dual master’s degrees in engineering and management science.

Doug carries a personal commitment to building teams and cultures in which talented people can do the best work of their careers. He has a passion for the history of great products, technology and design, and is particularly inspired by Henry Ford’s vision for the Model T: “A motor car … constructed of the best materials, by the best [people] to be hired, after the simplest designs that modern engineering can devise.”

Doug and Cathy have three children, studying and practicing product design, engineering and science.
