Premium Standard Leather Quality for New Ford Focus Highlights Increasingly Luxurious Status of Ford Vehicles

  • Customers who specify leather interior for their new Ford Focus will find it equipped with premium “Windsor” leather
  • Passenger vehicles from the spacious Galaxy MPV to the compact Fiesta also benefit from high quality leather interior options
  • Ford design specialists work with renowned material suppliers to produce a wide range of fashionable and atmospheric interior options for customers

All Ford Focus customers who choose leather interiors will now get premium Windsor full grain leather

COLOGNE, Germany, April 07, 2011 – Even in the modern era, leather remains the ultimate expression of vehicle interior quality – and the latest Focus range now features its highest quality standard leather interior to date.

Customers who specify a leather interior for their new Ford Focus will find it equipped with the premium “Windsor” leather previously used mainly for the exclusive Ford Individual range of optional extras.

Throughout the history of the motorcar leather has been used to maximise the comfort, durability and appeal of vehicle interiors and the natural product has been employed by Ford for a century to give its customers a truly high quality interior experience.

This trend shows no sign of abating as customers continue to request even greater levels of luxury and quality from their Ford vehicles. To meet this demand, Ford works hard to ensure that its leather interiors are not only of extremely high quality but are also available in as wide a range of styles and in as great a range of vehicles as possible.

Ford utilises leather’s natural appeal

Nothing can match the immediacy of leather in making an impression. “When you open the door of a leather-trimmed car there’s a real ‘wow’ sensation,” says John McLeod, chief designer, Vehicle Personalisation. “The first impression the customer gets from that fragrance and then from the feel of the material is extremely important. Leather exudes a quality that makes the customer feel good about getting into the car every time, and that’s exactly what we want to achieve with our cars.”

As well as the extremely high standard of leather interior present in the new Ford Focus, the Galaxy, S-MAX, Kuga, Mondeo, C-MAX and Fiesta ranges all offer high quality leather interior options. Windsor leather is a “full grain” leather as opposed to the less luxurious “corrected” leathers that are normally seen in vehicles of this category. It is used on the entire seat, right down to the piping and back map pockets, whereas the norm is to use vinyl on the sides and back of the seats.

Speaking of the new interior for the Focus range, Ruth Pauli, chief designer, Colour and Material Design, says: “Some manufacturers probably feel that leather of the quality that can now be found in the Focus doesn’t belong in a family vehicle, but we know that our customers appreciate high quality materials because of the demand we have seen for comprehensively equipped versions of our cars.”

“Ford owners who demand material quality and cutting-edge design in their homes – from their clothes and accessories – will now find it in their cars, too.”

Compared to 2008, and since the introduction of Windsor leather in Ford Mondeo and S-MAX, for instance, there has been a real shift in customer appreciation of full leather – orders increased from 5.6 percent to 11.7 percent in case of the Mondeo, and from 7.1 percent to 12.4 percent in case of the S-MAX.

Leather quality is present from the very beginning

In order to produce a leather interior of the quality demanded by Ford customers, it’s essential to begin with the finest leather hides. Ford sources leather from some of the most illustrious names in the industry, including Boxmark, Bridge of Weir, Eagle Ottawa, Mario Levi and Pasubio.

“Ford’s Windsor quality leather is a full grain leather produced from beautiful hides and it really adds to the feeling of quality, of sophistication and the ambience inside Ford models,” says Pauli.

As with all materials sourced for Ford vehicles, measures are taken to ensure the leather that brings an additional level of luxury to Ford interiors is ethically sourced and produced with minimal impact on the environment. Ford Mondeo leather supplier Bridge of Weir also sets a shining example in this important area, boasting an £6 million sustainable leather facility that utilises waste from the production process to create power.
