Ford’s Twin-Scroll 2.0-Liter EcoBoost Engine Debuting on 2015 Edge Offers More Capability, Better Performance Feel
DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 22, 2014 – The all-new 2015 Ford Edge, due in showrooms in early 2015, will be the first Ford vehicle in North America powered by the company’s new twin-scroll 2.0-liter EcoBoost® engine. The 2015 model is the first Edge to come standard with EcoBoost power.
This new twin-scroll 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine is expected to be more responsive and fun to drive, with better performance feel, compared to the current 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, which is offered as optional equipment in Edge for $995.
“The twin-scroll 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder is not only more responsive and enjoyable to drive, but gives Edge customers more capability than the outgoing powertrain,” said J.D. Shanahan, chief program engineer of the all-new Edge. “By incorporating a myriad of changes, our smallest, most-efficient engine can now be ordered with towing capability and all-wheel drive, making the new 2015 Edge more capable than ever.”
Beginning early in 2015, production of the twin-scroll 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder will get under way at Ford’s Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1, in Brook Park, Ohio. In late 2013, the company announced an investment of nearly $200 million and 450 new jobs. As production ramps up, new twin-scroll 2.0-liter EcoBoost engines will be shipped to Oakville, Ontario, in Canada, where Edge is produced. Currently, four-cylinder engines in Edge are imported from Europe.
In addition to being more responsive than the current 2.0-liter EcoBoost, the new twin-scroll engine will provide more capability. For the first time, customers choosing the four-cylinder engine in a new Edge will be able to order all-wheel drive. A towing package capable of pulling a 3,500-pound trailer will also be available.
Currently, four-cylinder Edge models are offered in front-wheel drive only and cannot be ordered with a trailer tow package. Due in part to these constraints, four-cylinder models have accounted for less than 5 percent of total Edge sales for the first 11 months of 2014. With the launch of the new twin-scroll EcoBoost engine, Ford expects four-cylinder models to account for more than 30 percent of total Edge sales.
In the new Ford Edge, the twin-scroll EcoBoost engine is expected to deliver an estimated 245 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque. Final output and EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings will be confirmed closer to product launch, early in 2015.
In addition to the unique twin-scroll turbocharger, the 2.0-liter EcoBoost now features new pistons that provide a higher, more efficient compression ratio (going from 9.3:1 to 9.7:1); a newly designed, integrated exhaust manifold optimized for the twin-scroll setup; a new active oil control system; an active wastegate to more accurately manage boost and torque levels; and a new, high-pressure direct-injection fuel system for more precise fuel delivery.
Ford’s available Auto Start-Stop system can be paired with the twin-scroll 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine. This technology seamlessly shuts down the engine to significantly decrease fuel consumption in heavy traffic, reducing tailpipe emissions to zero while the vehicle is stationary and the engine is off.
A full build-and-price site for the all-new 2015 Ford Edge – www.ford.com – has been up and running since early November. Through early December, more than 22,000 consumers visited the site and priced a new Edge.
Edge SE, SEL and the top-of-the-line Titanium series will feature the new twin-scroll 2.0-liter EcoBoost as standard equipment. A naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 will be available on certain models. Edge Sport will feature Ford’s new twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6.
